An unforgettable Father's Day
This year I had a Father's Day I'll never forget. I'm too fried to write it out in long form, but here are the highs and lows:
- My dad took a nose dive into an egress window while trying to catch a chipmunk who had fallen in. Broke three ribs.
- The next day we started our family vacation. Right as my sister started her multi-hour car ride to join us, her daughter broke a tooth and had to rush to the dentist. Once they got on the road to finally start their road trip, they blew a trailer tire.
- While on an ATV ride with my wife, I pulled off a dirt road to give a car behind me plenty of room to pass. That part of the shoulder, while appearing "solid" to drive on with grass/branches/weeds, was actually a steep drop-off. We flipped 90 degrees and sustained a lot of bruises. We headed to the ER the next morning and fortunately nothing was broken. They gave me a shot of pain-reliever in the butt. It did nothing for the pain and burned like crazy, so that was fun.
- When vacation was over and everybody returned to their homes, my mom called to say my dad was unable to get up from a seated position and was feeling terrible. He was rushed to the hospital where they discovered all his levels were off (blood pressure, glucose, etc.) and he had some internal bleeding. They considered airlifting him to get some more specialized help, but eventually got him stable and transferred via ambulance. At the new hospital, they put in a chest tube and drained more than 1.8 liters of blood from his chest! After a few days in the hospital, dad's now back at home to rest and recuperate.
All things considered, I'm trying to think of the positives: all these accidents could've been so much worse. That said, I've never been so happy to be done with a vacation, and I'm hoping next year is a tad less dramatic.
